THE LORD JESUS CHIRST’ SAYING 7C
Bible: Luke 5: 17-36
Main verse: 2TIMOTHY 2: 1 – You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
*******
– From the story that we have studied the last couple of weeks there was a paralyzed man came to Jesus for healing. After Jesus let the paralytic knew that his sins were forgiven, He healed his paralysis with His words:
MATTHEW 9: 6 – But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. So he said to the paralyzed man: Get up, take your mat and go home.
– By doing so, Jesus let the crowd knew that He was the One Who could forgive sins to mankind, and healing a sick and paralyzed man was just a small task that He could do with mere words alone.
– But God also wants us to know that physical sickness is not what we human should worry about, but we must pay attention to the sickness of the soul. That kind of sickness is sins in human life.
– The problem is humans always see themselves are good enough in their own eyes, even are better than others, as in the case of the hypocrite:
LUKE 18: 11 – The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: God, I thank you that I am not like other people, robbers, evildoers, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
– But in God’s eyes, every human is sinner and their good works are considered as filthy rags, as it was recorded in the Bible:
ROMANS 3: 10 – There is no one righteous, not even one.
ISAIAH 64: 6 – All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf,
– The sickness of the body can kill us, but humans must meet death someday, sooner or later, no one can avoid it. So healing body from sickness is just temporary. But the sickness of the soul can put us into hell forever. And we must remember this, a person could escape prison when he died, even it was a maximum security prison. But no one can escape hell after going there. He must stay there and suffer forever.
– And we also must know this: The horrified word is not suffer, but the word forever. Just imagine a condition that we must be in it forever then we can understand how severe the punishment in hell for sinners is.
– So, now we can understand that when the paralytic came to Jesus wanting to be healed from his sickness, but instead Jesus had used that occasion to teach us the important of getting rid of sins out of our lives.
– Being healed from physical sickness only helps us to live a few years more on Earth, but being healed spiritually, as being forgiven of sins, helps us to live happily in Heaven forever.
– That’s why Jesus forgave the paralytic from sins first before He healed his physical sickness.
– We can understand that the paralytic, after being healed, would never want to be sick again. So he would certainly try his best to avoid committing sins.
– But sadly, although many Christians had been freed from sins by the grace of God in Jesus Christ, but they have put themselves back into the bondage of sins by refusing to be born again, to live a holy life, and to follow instructions in the Bible carefully.
– According to the Bible, when a person is born again in Christ, he does not want to sins a second time. He will try his best to avoid sins as much as possible, as it was recorded in John’s first letter:
1JOHN 5: 18 – We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who were born of God keep them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them.
1GIĂNG 5: 18 – Chúng ta biết rằng ai sanh bởi Đức Chúa Trời, thì hẳn chẳng phạm tội; nhưng ai sanh bởi Đức Chúa Trời, thì tự giữ lấy mình, ma quỉ chẳng làm hại người được.
– The phrase does not continue to sin means those who were born by God’s grace don’t want to sin again. They are still tempted from time to time and sometime they failed, but they never want to commit sins deliberately.
– We should know that people who failed before temptation are different from those who commit sins deliberately. We can use sickness as an example to illustrate it:
– A person who failed at temptation is like the one who tried to live a healthy life but could be infested by sick people or by a dirty environment. And a person who committed sins deliberately like the one who brought sickness into himself by his own action, like smoking and drinking.
– Everyone knows that smoking is bad for lungs and can definitely cause lung cancer. The percentage is very high, but many keep ignoring it and continue to smoke. If unbelievers smoked and drunk, that’s their choices, but as Christians did that, it’s a problem.
– In physical life, people do not want to get sick again after being healed, but in spiritual life, many Christians want to be sick again after coming back to God. How can we be called children of light if we continue to do that all our lives? How can we say we are Christians while destroying God’s temple, that our bodies, by smoking and drinking?
– Some Christians will answer those questions before God at the end.
– Moreover, Jesus also shown to the crowd that His healing could empower a sick person to be strong right away. And because Jesus never change, so we can use this to distinguish which healing is came from God.
– Generally, after being healed from physical sickness, a person needs time to be recovered. The time can be varied according to how serious of the illness was. But when Jesus healed a person by forgiving his sins, that man can be well and strong immediately, as in the case of the paralytic:
LUKE 5: 24-25 – But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God.
– Look at the story in spiritual way, we now can understand that when a Christian were healed by God’s power, he would be strong right away to serve the Lord and His church, as in the case of Peter’s mother-in-law:
MATTHEW 8: 14-15 – When Jesus came into Peter’s house, He saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on Him.
MA-THI-Ơ 8: 14-15 – Đoạn, Đức Chúa Jêsus vào nhà Phi -e-rơ, thấy bà gia người nằm trên giường, đau rét. Ngài bèn rờ tay người bịnh, rét liền mất đi; rồi người đứng dậy giúp việc hầu Ngài.
– Therefore, when we see a Christian who try to live a godly life according to the Bible’ standards and eager to serve God, we know he/she had been forgiven by God and being healed from sins completely.
– We hope all of us experiencing that kind of healing in our lives and continue to be strong and well in Christ until we see Him face to face.
– May God bless us know how to come to Him to be healed from physical and spiritual sickness so that our joy is always abundance in Him forever. Amen.
