(Leviticus 21: 13-14) And he shall take a wife in her virginity. A widow or a divorced woman or a defiled woman or a harlot—these he shall not marry; but he shall take a virgin of his own people as wife.
Christian marriage is the earthly symbol of Christ and His church, so we should be carefully in choosing our spouses when getting into marriages in order to rightfully and respectfully representing the relationship of Christ and His church. The recommendation from the Scripture should be applied for both men and women, especially those who are ministers of the church, for in Christ we are the chosen royal priesthood (1Peter 2: 9-10). By obeying God’s command in this matter, we can show that we love Him more than anyone else in this life. As for us, when we reserve ourselves for the one we come into marriage with, we show our loving respect for him or her, too. The appreciation from each other will make our marriages more satisfied.
