BIBLE COMMENTARY/Psalm 119: 9
(In relating to 1TIMOTHY 4: 12 – Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity)
PSALM 119: 9 – How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.
– Staying on the path of purity means Christians must live, think, behave and conduct according to instructions in the Bible (James 2: 12). They are standards that God wants us to follow to achieve a happy, joyous life on earth and eternal life when Jesus comes the second times.
– Because humans have not carefully followed God’s instructions and live according to the standards in the Bible so they have been miserable all their lives. None of them were actually, completely happy. Human’ struggles in every aspect of their lives are proofs of it.
– To be at peace in our minds and live a joyous life, we must follow God’s instructions in the Bible. They will also make us to be pure in God’s eyes and earn the respect from others, as it was indicated in 1Timothy 4: 12.
– Walking on the path of purity is considered as the main part of a godly life that Christians should have.
– It means we must to be pure in every aspect of our lives, or in other words, we must be pure in body and mind.
– For examples, we should not use any dirty word when speaking (Colossians 3: 8, Ephesians 4: 29, 5: 3-4, Ecclesiastes 5: 6). There are plenty of them that unbelievers usually use. We should be careful not to utter or listen to those words.
– We should not think of filthy things or have the intention to hurt anyone. In a case that we state a fact that maybe hurt someone is another matter. We will get to it when we study the differences between honesty and fake courtesy. Another matter is the intention to harm and the right to defend. We will also study the differences between them later.
– We should not look into things that are not appropriate, or can affect our minds (Luke 11: 34). Studying them is another matter, but do not linger at them more than the required necessary.
– Our actions and behaves should also follow the standards in the Bible, like trying our best to avoid whatever not in God’s approval, even the whole consider it as good, proper or normal.
– Our desires should be the same as God’s desires, that we are full of the Holy Spirit. No human law forbids those goodness (Ephesians 5: 22-23).
