BIBLE COMMENTARY/Psalm 1: 5

PSALM 1: 5 – Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

– Throughout human history, we see a lot of crimes left unsolved and criminals left unpunished (Psalm 37: 35). Victims died without justice being truly served (Ecclesiastes 4: 1). Injustice is so profound in human society that we cannot find a place that is truly safe anywhere on Earth (Isaiah 3: 5), therefore there must be a Judgment Day at the end for all human beings (Proverbs 29: 13). It was mentioned many times in the Bible and God will make sure it happens, because He is the God of Just (Hebrews 9: 27).
– This verse indicates that the ungodly shall not be able to stand before the glory of God. His existence will make the ungodly realize that they were all wrong by not believing in Him (Psalm 10: 4) and the fear they get when they see Him will make them tremble. Many criminals had tremble even before human judges who are often partial.
– Good and bad people are mixed together in this world, because we don’t know what crimes others did in secret, but God knows exactly who each person is, so sinners will not be mixed with good people on that day and for eternity (Matthew 13: 49). God will punish them for the crimes they did while living on Earth (Psalm 9: 17), so we must try our best to live a morally good life till the end of it.
