BIBLE COMMENTARY/Psalm 1: 1
PSALM 1: 1 – Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers.
– Everyone wants to be blessed. We know that humans cannot bless each other. Blessings come from God, and if we want to be blessed by Him, we have to abide by His rules, follow His ways and live accordingly to His standards in the Bible.
– Many people don’t accept that they have to abide by God’s rules in order to be blessed by Him. They think that God has the responsibility to bless mankind, but humans don’t have to please God to get His blessings. That’s why many people don’t remember to worship Him but they are quick to blame God and criticize Him when disaster strikes.
– Humans usually contradict themselves like that. They forget that it’s the same in the human world. To be rewarded, people have to follow the rules. Students have to go to school and study in order to get a diploma. Workers have to do their job in order to get their paychecks. Humans themselves need to live according to God’s standards in order to be blessed.
– Some of the standards have been proclaimed right here in this verse. In order to be blessed by God, we should not walk with the wicked (Psalm 7: 14, Proverbs 21: 10), or stand in the way that sinners take (Psalm 1: 5, Proverbs 1: 10), or sit in the company of mockers (Proverbs 19: 29, 22: 10).
– People often think that being like these wicked people is fun, and that living by God’s way is boring and tedious. That’s why human morals have declined steadily in recent times. That’s why human life is so miserable. The world has been losing God’s blessings because of their wickedness.
– For us Christians, it’s in our interests to avoid them all. We certainly don’t want to share their fate or to suffer the same consequences as theirs when Christ returns.
