BIBLE COMMENTARY/Joshua 1: 8
JOSHUA 1: 8 – This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
– Moses, man of God, called the Word of God the book of law because it contains the rules and standards for mankind and God will use them to judge everyone at the end (John 12: 48).
– Biblical scholars argued that the book of law means the Torah, the laws for Jewish people only, but they should remember that all of God’s words are laws, including His words in the other books in the Old and New Testement. Because of their views many Biblical scholars don’t have the whole understanding of the Bible and in many cases their views are contradicting to each other and to themselves, too (2Peter 3: 16).
– For Christians, this verse commands us to read the Bible everyday, and mediate in it. We should at least try to read the whole book a few times or more than that, not just some verses or some parts that we like and ignoring the others. By doing so, with help from the Holy Spirit, we will understand wholly and completely what God has intended for us.
– Like parents who love their children much more when they obey their instructions, God loves us when we take heed of His commands in the Bible (John 14: 23) . Remember God is always good and loving, so His instructions are always perfect and beneficial for our lives (John 6: 63, Proverbs 4: 10). That’s why we will be prosperous and to have good success when we live according to God’ standards recorded in the Bible.
