BIBLE COMMENTARY: James 3: 2

JAMES 3: 2 – We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.

– According to the Scripture, everybody has fault, no matter how many years they have been educated in human institutions or where they are on social status.
– Because of that human weaknesses, people usually feel OK to be at fault sometimes, especially in speech. They even make this kind of imperfection into a crime by lying and misleading others with words (Suggested question: Can you give some examples of those crimes committed by words?)
– But God wants us to be perfect (why?) and those who are counted perfect have never at fault in what they say (Suggested question: How can we achieve that kind of perfection? Hint: According to the Bible there are three principles that Christians should remember before going to speak)
– There are many Christians who think that imperfection is OK and some even think that it cannot be improved. They forgot that God called us to separate from this wicked world and to be better than unbelievers,
– God wants Christians to imitate Him and Christ (Ephesians 5: 1, 1Corinthians 11: 1) so we must improve ourselves constantly, starting with our speech,
– Christians cannot let weaknesses to be permanent in our lives, because we are representing God on this earth (Matthew 5: 13-14,
– Think about the word ‘never’ that the Scripture has used in this verse. To achieve a never at fault in speech, Christians need to train ourselves constantly in this aspect and we must ask for help from God.
– Unbelievers used to say that because they could not be honest all the time so they lied to prosper their career as politicians and journalists, but Christians cannot live like that,
– That is one of the reasons that Christians should try to avoid politic and those career politicians who claimed themselves Christians are fake and many of them are professional liars, especially true for those pastors that turned into career politicians.
