BIBLE COMMENTARY/Hebrews 9: 27
HEBREWS 9: 27 – And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.
– God decides that humans must die one day, so it’s a certainty that no one can escape, except for Enoch and Elijah (Genesis 5: 24, 2Kings 2: 11). Death happens to everyone else because of Adam eating the forbidden fruit in Eden (Romans 5: 12).
– Humans are always afraid of death, but it’s inevitable. Everyone who was born into this life must go down that path and open the door to the other world by themselves (Psalm 89: 48).
– The most important thing for humans to do to prepare for death is decide how to live in this life before facing God on the other side. God has reminded the Israelites (Amos 4: 12) and He still reminds the world about that in the Bible.
– Everyone knows death is a certainty, but many people still cling onto this life. The Scripture lets us know that this life is short (Psalm 90: 10), but the next one will be eternal either in hell or in heaven.
– Physical death is first. Suffering eternally in hell is the second death (Revelation 20: 14, 21: 8). Believing in Jesus helps humans to escape the second death and to live forever in happiness with God in heaven.
