GOOD EFFECTS OF MUSIC
Bible: 1Samuel 16: 14-23
Main verse: EPHESIANS 5: 19 – Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord
*******
– This verse emphasizes the importance of music. God wants us to communicate with everyone with the spirit of joy and happiness.
– Music is one of the many aspects of Christian life. Every time we gather together in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we sing. In the Bible, there are examples of God’s people singing when they were happy after being rescued from enemies like in the case of David, Miriam, or even when they were in prison like the case of Paul and Silas. All Christian churches around the world sing.
ACTS 16: 25-26 – And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.
We even sing when we are in mourning of loved ones who passed away. We will sing in every circumstance, and not only we sing in this world, but we will sing before God for eternity as well. Music is always present in human life. There is almost no one in the world who does not appreciate the sound of music.
Music does have its advantages and disadvantages, which we should learn to understand how to use it for our benefit. However, music overall is very good for our spirtual well-being.
King Saul was troubled by an evil spirit, but David had helped him out by playing the harp. Whenever he played, the evil spirit would depart from Saul and he would be refreshed and well again.
1SAMUEL 16: 23 – And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
During ancient times, many people understood, although vaguely, about the good effects of music on the human mind and body. One example is in the Chinese language; the word medicine “YAO” came from the word “YUE” for music.
Studies in America showed that people tend to drive faster and more reckless when listening to fast music. They changed lane more often than others (about 140 times an hour or more). Experts suggest that we should listen to music at 120 beats per minute or slower to be safe when driving (Study says this music makes you drive faster/Fox News).
Music has many good effects, so some people have created an organization to use music to help military members in their transition back to civilian life. It’s called the Warrior Music Foundation.
There is a song named Raise A Hallelujah with a story of a little boy who was healed by prayers and music:
I raise a hallelujah, in the presence of my enemies. I raise a hallelujah, louder than the unbelief. I raise a hallelujah, my weapon is a melody. I raise a hallelujah, Heaven comes to fight for me. I’m gonna sing, in the middle of the storm. Louder and louder, you’re gonna hear my praises roar. Up from the ashes, hope will arise. Death is defeated, the King is alive!
Just begin to raise your own hallelujah. I can’t do it for you. There’s a song written on your heart only you can sing. And when you sing enemies flee. When you sing prison walls come falling down. When you sing Heaven invades the earth. So just begin to lift up your hallelujah. Raise it like a banner. Raise it like a flag. Raise it in the middle of the storm. Let it rise, let it rise. Like a symphony to the King. Everything to You, Jesus. We raise it all. Sing a little louder!
So, we should make singing to be one of the most important part of our lives and then we will see the benefit comes from it.
May God bless us with hearts that want to sing more for Him to glorify him, so that we will be blessed more, help many people come to God and mend the broken heart of the world with heavenly music. Amen.
